KOTK - call Translational Research projects 2024

Research

What?

Kom Op Tegen Kanker (KOTK) aims to fund translational research where new clinical cancer research is initiated based on results achieved.
  • Research to develop new or better treatments for cancer, better diagnosis, better cancer follow-up and research on side effects of cancer (treatment).
  • The project should include all necessary research activities to enable the transition to clinical research, which fits within the call for clinical research projects at KOTK.
  • A demonstrable collaboration with clinical researchers as part of the research project is required to ensure clinical applicability.
  • KOTK underlines the complementary nature of its funding for biomedical cancer research for which no or insufficient funding is made available by government, industry and/or other funders.
The term of a project is maximum 4 years.

Budget: 6 million euro (subject to approval of budget 2025)

Who?

Funding can be applied for translational research organised from Flemish research institutions (or for participation of Flemish research institutions in international research). A Flemish research institution refers to non-profit R&D actors: universities (as recognised in the decree of 4 April 2003 on the restructuring of higher education in Flanders (Section 3, art. 4))1, hospitals and research institutes of the Flemish Region. Research institutions can submit a project insofar as the research will be carried out in Flanders without direct commercial purposes. Non-profit R&D actors not located in the Flemish Region can act as partners in a project, but cannot be awarded grants.

To submit a project application as (co-)promoter, the researcher must hold at least the academic degree of doctor (PhD). A researcher can submit only one project application as a principal promoter per call. Each project can have only 1 main promoter. The principal supervisor has a coordinating role for the entire project. Moreover, a researcher can be appointed as co-promoter on a project application only once per call.

KOTK wants to stimulate young researchers to apply as promotor. In the application form there's a possibility to indicate that the promotor has less than 10 years of experience after obtaining the doctorate.

Application?

The application process takes place in two stages. In the first stage, an abstract is submitted with a brief description of the project according to the standard form offered. If the abstract is evaluated positively, a comprehensive project proposal may be submitted.

  • Documents to submit available at expro.komoptegenkanker.be.
  • Deadline submission abstract: 26 September 2024 (no later than midnight).
  • Deadline submission full proposal: 13 March 2025 (no later than midnight).
Announcement of results: July 2025.
